Walk into any gym and you will find people training in straight lines. Bench press. Squat. Deadlift. Forward, backward, up, down. It is logical, it is measurable, and for most fitness goals it works perfectly well. Tennis, however, is not a straight line sport. It is diagonal cuts and sudden stops and a serve that loads one side of the body with forces that the other side never experiences. Train like a gym goer when your sport demands something different, and you will build a body that looks fit but moves wrong.
This is the fundamental tension that sits at the center of tennis fitness, and it is why the players who look the most physically impressive on court are rarely the ones lifting the heaviest weights in the off season. They are the ones who have built their training around what the game actually asks of them.
So what does the game ask of them?
Rotational strength above almost everything else
Every shot in tennis originates from rotation. The power in a forehand does not come from the arm; it travels up from the ground, through the legs, through the hip turn, through the torso, and into the racket. A player with a weak core who swings hard is essentially trying to transfer force through wet paper. The energy dissipates before it arrives.
This is why the training programs of serious players are built around rotational movements rather than linear ones. Medicine ball rotational throws, cable wood chops, Pallof presses, and landmine rotations all train the obliques and deep core muscles in the way they actually function during match play. Planks have their place, but a static hold does not prepare the body for the explosive, loaded twist of a 120 mile per hour serve.
Lateral movement and the muscles nobody trains
Most recreational players lose points with their feet before they lose them with their racket. The ability to accelerate sideways, decelerate without collapsing, and push back off the outside foot is what separates players who are in position from players who are always a step late. The muscles responsible for that movement, the hip abductors, the glutes, the adductors, and the stabilizers around the ankle, are almost entirely ignored in standard gym programming.
Lateral band walks, lateral bounds, skater squats, and single leg Romanian deadlifts build the specific strength that shows up in a split step and a recovery sprint. They also protect the knees and hips from the cumulative load of thousands of direction changes across a season.
The asymmetry problem that almost nobody talks about
Spend enough years playing tennis and your body will reflect it. The dominant shoulder sits lower. The dominant forearm is thicker. The muscles along the dominant side of the trunk are overdeveloped relative to the non dominant side. This is not a vanity issue; it is a structural one. Asymmetry in the torso and shoulder complex is one of the most consistent predictors of upper body injury in tennis players, particularly in the rotator cuff and the muscles that stabilize the scapula.
The fix is deliberate, targeted work on the non dominant side. Single arm cable rows, single arm carries, and shoulder stability work with light resistance on the non hitting arm are not glamorous exercises, but they are the difference between a body that holds up across a long season and one that starts sending warning signals by the third tournament.
Shoulder stability as a non negotiable
The serving motion puts enormous demand on a small group of muscles that are easy to overlook when everything is going well and impossible to ignore when something goes wrong. The rotator cuff, the serratus anterior, and the lower trapezius collectively keep the shoulder blade positioned correctly and protect the joint through the deceleration phase of a serve, which is actually where most injuries occur.
Resistance band external rotations, face pulls, Y T W raises, and thoracic spine mobility work are the unsexy foundation of a shoulder that can sustain thousands of serves across a career. No player who has lost months to a rotator cuff injury will tell you this work was not worth doing.
What this looks like in practice
A training week built around tennis does not need to be complicated. Two days of strength work focused on rotational power and lateral strength, one day of shoulder stability and asymmetry correction, and consistent mobility work for the hips and thoracic spine covers most of the ground. The goal is not to build a body that looks impressive standing still. It is to build one that moves efficiently, absorbs force without breaking down, and keeps delivering for as long as you want to play.
The players who understand this distinction tend to have long careers. The ones who train like bodybuilders tend to have impressive off seasons and frustrating ones on court. The game will always tell you what your body actually needs. The question is whether you are listening.
